A glass tube rotameter is a device used for measuring the flow rate of liquids or gases in a closed tube. It operates on the principle of variable area flow measurement, where the flow rate is indicated by the position of a float inside a vertically oriented tapered glass tube.

Key Components:

1. Glass Tube: This is typically tapered, with a wider opening at the top and a narrower opening at the bottom. It is transparent so that the position of the float can be easily observed.

2. Float: The float inside the tube rises and falls depending on the flow rate of the fluid passing through the tube. The position of the float is a direct indicator of the flow rate.

3. Scale: The glass tube often has a graduated scale along its length, allowing for direct reading of the flow rate corresponding to the float’s position.

Working Principle:

• The fluid enters the bottom of the glass tube and flows upwards. The flow rate causes the float to rise within the tapered tube. As the flow rate increases, the float rises higher, and as the flow rate decreases, the float lowers.

• The float moves to a point where the upward force due to the flow balances with the downward gravitational force on the float, thereby stabilizing at a certain height. This height is a function of the flow rate.

• The flow rate is then read by noting the position of the float against the graduated scale.
