A rotameter works on the variable area principle, using a tapered tube and a float to measure fluid flow: fluid enters the bottom, pushing the float up until the upward drag force (from fluid velocity) and buoyancy balance the float's downward weight, creating an equilibrium; the height of the float at this stable point, read against a calibrated scale, indicates the flow rate. The wider top of the tube allows the float to rise higher as flow increases, providing a linear, proportional reading.
